Marvel Hot Toys Phase 4 Predictions – What’s Next?

Even though Avengers: Endgame is a wrap and the spoiler ban officially lifted the trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home has been sparse about revealing details regarding what’s next for the the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s clear that we are due for some major changes but fans are left asking themselves – what do these changes look like? Which major characters from the Marvel Universe will we see joining our roster of super heroes for the next set of Marvel movies? The recent acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney back in March 2019 was a big deal for comic book fans because Marvel Studios now has access and the rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four, Deadpool and countless other popular characters.

Even though there are a lot of major differences in the comic book stories by Marvel and what we have seen on the big screen, it’s clear that the writers of the cinematic universe draw inspiration from the original stories and characters. The great thing about the Marvel universe is the sheer endless number of different characters and storylines there are to explore which means a whole lot of Marvel Hot Toys figures on the horizon! Here’s a look at some of our Marvel Hot Toys Phase 4 Predictions for figures we expect to see released with the next generation of Marvel films.

Adam Warlock

Adam Warlock as seen in the Marvel Comic universe wielding the Infinity Gauntlet

You might remember Adam Warlock originally teased in the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy but we haven’t heard or seen anything from the character since then. Before the release of Avengers: Endgame there were a number of fan theories that insisted Adam Warlock would make an appearance in the fight against Thanos but we now know that not to be the case. This speculation was likely birthed from the fact that Adam Warlock was able to wield the Infinity Gauntlet in the comics and it would have been a natural introduction point. A sixth scale figure of this character would be hit or miss for me depending on the costume/character design of him on the silver screen.

The Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four as seen in the Marvel comics universe

We all try to forget the two Fantastic Four movies we have seen to date and that’s a tall task with how bad these movies were. Both the 2005 and 2015 films have a score of less than 50% on Rotten Tomatoes so it’s probably a good thing the reigns is back in the hands of the team at Marvel Studios. Not only are these some of the most beloved characters but their foe, Dr. Doom is easily one of the most compelling villains after Thanos. In fact, the Russo Brothers recently went on record stating that directing a Fantastic Four movie would be one way to get them back working at Marvel. Just imagine the presence a Hot Toys figure of The Thing or the effects and swappable parts we might get with a Hot Toys version of Human Torch.

Iron Lad

Iron Lad as seen in the Marvel comics universe

You might have recognized the young man at Tony Stark’s funeral as the kid from Iron Man 3, Harley Keener. Keener ended up working alongside Tony to stop The Mandarin and proved to be a quick-witted kid who was very similar to our hero in a lot of ways. With the sound bite heard during the Avengers: Endgame credits of an Iron Man armor under construction fans have speculated that it was the construction of the “next” Iron Man armor. The Russo Brothers later commented that this was not foreshadowing (can we really trust them?) but someone has to pick-up the mantle of Iron Man and the presence of Keener at the funeral illustrates the impact Stark had on this kid. With the popularity of Iron Man Hot Toys and the character in general, fans and collectors are chomping at the bit to hear what’s next for the character or his successor.

X-Men

The original X-Men as seen in the Marvel comic universe

With a ton of character changes coming after Avengers: Endgame the recent acquisition of the X-Men by Disney comes at the perfect time. As we say goodbye to a number of major characters it’s the ideal time for Marvel to introduce us to their new and re-imagined version of the X-Men team. It may be tough at first to see another actor portray Wolverine on the big screen after Hugh Jackman did such an amazing job but if there’s one studio that’s up to the casting and writing task it’s the folks that captivated a world with Iron Man, Captain America and others. Hot Toys collectors have pleaded for X-Men figures from Hot Toys for years but without the license it was never going to happen. Looks like this wish may finally be fulfilled.

Kang the Conquerer

Kang the Conquerer as seen in the Marvel comic universe

After the events of Avengers: Endgame it would be no surprise if Kang made an appearance in Phase Four as a direct consequence of unlocking the secrets of time travel when the Avengers were jumping back and forth in time to collect the Infinity Stones. One theory prior to the release of the movie was that Tony Stark was going to re-appear as Kang the Conqueror from an alternate dimension after adsorbing the power of the stones. Wrong prediction aside, there is definitely going to be some fallout of this time travel by the Avengers – a classic cause and effect scenario is very common in storytelling and particularly in the MCU. If there’s one thing that we always have a shortage of from Hot Toys it’s always the villains so here’s hoping after the success of Thanos on the big screen that changes moving forward.

She-Hulk

She-Hulk as seen in various eras of the Marvel comic universe

Despite being introduced to Professor Hulk (the collision of both the Bruce Banner and Hulk personalities into one character) in Avengers: Endgame, we did not get a chance to see Hulk throw down in typical Avengers fashion. Fans of the character have mixed opinions about this new direction but one thing is for sure: everyone wants more Hulk! Watching Bruce Banner struggle with his split personality throughout both Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War on top of his earlier issues with unanswered feelings for Natasha/Black Widow he’s long overdue for a win. She-Hulk would also be a great way for the writers to give us a more complete look at the Hulk as a character; exploring sides of him that we have not previously seen on screen instead of just “SMASH!” My Hot Toys figure of Hulk is looking a little lonely there on the shelf and they say behind every good man is a.. hulking, kick-ass woman?

Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer as seen in the Marvel comics universe

With the Avengers likely to return to space in Phase 4 it would make sense for the audience to be introduced to a character that can guide us threw this strange new territory. The Silver Surfer originally made his debut in the The Fantastic Four Issue Number 48 in 1966, the birth child of the talented Jack Kirby. This character was one of the most striking designs Jack Kirby ever came up with and helped usher in what many comic fans refer to as, “The Galactus Trilogy.” While he may not enjoy the popularity of characters like Spider-Man or Iron Man there’s no question that Silver Surfer has emerged as a fan favorite. Even though everyone has personal tastes on what they like or dislike in character design there’s no question that a one sixth scale figure of Silver Surfer if executed properly would shine like a diamond in the center of any Hot Toys collection.

With so many unique characters to choose from in the Marvel comics world this list could have easily been two or three times as long as it is with characters we hope to see make an appearance in the Cinematic Universe. Instead we chose to keep the list focused on characters we think have a real possibility of being an active part of Phase 4. After the events of Avengers: Endgame it’s clear that the roster of heroes we enjoy on the silver screen could use a little bolstering following the losses of major characters Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. Of any characters, Hot Toys has had an obsession with releasing multiple iterations of both Iron Man and Captain America over the years so it will be interesting to see how they fill this void and with what production pieces. Which characters do you want to see join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Phase 4 and get a Hot Toys figure of for your personal collection?
