Mezco Announces The New One:12 Collective Popeye and Bluto: Stormy Seas Ahead 2-Pack!

If you had told most collectors that one of the best action figures of 2018 was going to be a Popeye figure, they’d have laughed you out of whatever Facebook group they were trolling in. Despite all odds, though, Mezco gave the One:12 Collective treatment to the old Sailor Man and it was indeed a resounding success. Mixing just the right amounts of artistic interpretation and real-world aesthetic gave their Popeye figure a winning recipe. After following up with a Mezco Direct Exclusive version that came in some of the most clever packaging ever, it looks like Mezco Toyz is ready to give it another go with a Deluxe Box Set!

This time, however, the NYC-based toy company has realized a third Popeye just isn’t going to be enough on his own. Their Stormy Seas Ahead 2-Pack will also include Popeye’s ultimate nemesis, Bluto!

Bluto made his debut in the original Popeye comic strip in 1932, three years after the strip debuted. When a Popeye cartoon was produced, Bluto was chosen to be the Big Bad, constantly trying to steal Olive Oyl away from the sailor.

A corrupt old Navy buddy of Popeye’s (at least according to some adaptations), Bluto was renamed Brutus for a while because of confusion about who held the rights to the name. So if you remember one or the other and are slightly confused, they’re actually the same jerk who picks on Popeye.

The Deluxe Box Set looks loaded with awesomeness. Along with the aforementioned Bluto and Popeye figures, we’re getting new accessories. A gaff hook, metal wrench and kettlebell are included for Bluto to either attack Popeye or possibly do CrossFit exercises with.

Popeye gets a new outfit and rain gear, which should make for very cool and unique displays on your shelf. The most enticing add-ons to me are the battle damaged alternate heads for not one, but both characters; a must-have for every “VS.” set.

All in all, this 2-pack is a nice surprise. Collectors who may have missed out on the earlier two releases of Popeye can now pick one up, while those who were able to grab them can now get Bluto and a Popeye with some unique accessories. It’s a win-win in my book.

The Mezco Toyz One:12 Collective Popeye & Bluto: Storm Seas Ahead Deluxe Box Set is available for pre-order now and is slated to release sometime in Q3, 2020.

Popeye, spinach-loving sailor, goes head-to-head with his brutish arch-rival: Bluto. This deluxe “Stormy Seas Ahead” box set sets the stage to spin a tale of two salty sailors and their ongoing titanic conflict.

The One:12 Collective Popeye gets a refresh. From his crisp white sailor slacks, to his navy and white trimmed shirt, Popeye looks shipshape and in bristle fashion! Included are three different head portraits: two classic One:12 Collective Popeye options and an all-new roughed-up portrait. Popeye comes complete with a wide range of iconic sailor accessories and outfitting listed below.

The One:12 Collective Bluto completes the set. Appearing like he has been hanging around the docks and is up to no good, Bluto cuts a choppy wake wearing a collared shirt over a long-sleeve undershirt, work pants, and work boots – all featuring his classic colors.  He is packaged with two head portraits displaying varying levels of brawn and brawl. Bluto is well-equipped with some heavy, real metal gear to give his adversary a run for his money.
