Mezco Toyz Arrives On The Planet Of The Apes With One:12 Collective Dr. Zaius Figure

If you only know Planet of the Apes from the more recent CGI films by director Matt Reeves, then you’re sorely missing out on some classic science fiction goodness. While the law of diminishing returns definitely sets in as you work your way through the original series of movies, that inaugural 1968 entry still stands the test of time to this day.

While most people first think of Charleston Heston’s character, George Taylor, it is Maurice Evans’ Doctor Zaius that steals the movie and that fans remember. The cruel leader of the Ape National Assembly with a disturbing desire to castrate his enemies, Zaius was and is an iconic film villain that deserves an amazing figure. Mezco Toyz first showed their take on the character quite recently at New York Toyfair, but the company is wasting no time getting the figure out to pre-order. They look to have done an excellent job bringing Zaius to plastic life. The tailoring on the doctor’s outfit looks excellent, as does the sculpting for both portraits. The calm visage wins for me, but they’re both wonderful jobs.

Mezco gets extra points for accurately reproducing Zaius’ silly-looking Ape toe-shoes, complete with soles. If you were hesitant to grant the Ape society their evolved status as the most civilized creatures, take one look at that sweet footwear and see the error of your ways, my friends.

I absolutely love and support Mezco continuing to include classic franchises like this in their One:12 Collective line. It would be easy for the company to coast on Marvel and DC characters forever, but digging into the history of film and comics shows their love of the material and the genre. Keep ‘em coming, Mezco Toyz.

The Mezco Toyz One: 12 Collective Planet of the Apes – Dr. Zaius Figure is available for pre-order now and is slated to drop Q4, 2020.

“Have you forgotten your scripture, the thirteenth scroll? “And Proteus brought the upright beast into the garden and chained him to a tree and the children did make sport of him.”
