You don’t get more ridiculous and iconic than the classic episode, “Surf’s Up! Joker’s Under,” from the 1966 Batman TV show. The image of Batman and the Joker in swim trunks over their costumes and hitting the waves on branded surfboards is not one you forget easily. Recognizing the endearing silliness of it all, Iron Studios has announced statues of each of the characters as they appear in the episode.
With excellent likenesses of the both Adam West and Cesar Romero, respectively, Iron Studios has done its usual impressive job of capturing the actors well.
The posing of each is in character, with Romero’s Joker making an over-the-top surf pose and Batman, restrained as always, holding a Shark Repellent spray can at the ready. The Shark Repellent alone brings a smile to my face and its addition here is just perfect.
While the characters of both the Dark Knight and the Clown Prince of Crime have been portrayed as very, very serious in the last decade, it’s extremely welcome to be reminded of a simpler, sillier take.
Sure, we can wallow in the existential angst of being a vigilante in a bat suit and a mentally ill psychopath with a fetish for clown makeup, but I’d rather see my Batman and Joker throw on their swimsuits over there clothes and Hang Ten!
I bet you would too.
