A Guide to Every Hot Toys Star Wars Stormtrooper Sixth Scale Figure, Part II

In Part I of our list covering every variation of the iconic Stormtrooper that Sixth Scale figure manufacturer Hot Toys has produced, we focused on the classic design seen in the Original Trilogy of films. As seen in the films Star WarsThe Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi, that classic style has stood the test of time to become an instantly recognizable image for fans and non-fans alike.

This second installment brings us to the modern Sequel Trilogy and the figures based on the redesigned Stormtrooper armor that was first seen in The Force Awakens. Just as we did before, this list will be focusing solely on the different troopers that are obviously variations on the First Order Stormtrooper. While we will get to the more unique looks for figures such as the Jet Troopers and Snowtroopers in the next entry, this one is all about the standard modern Stormtroopers.

As always, feel free to mention any corrections or pertinent information I may have missed. I am merely one insane writer who thought listing every Hot Toys Stormtrooper was a good idea, so I’ll probably make a mistake somewhere. Let’s get to it.

FIRST ORDER STORMTROOPERS

HOT TOYS MMS 317 STAR WARS: TFA – FO STORMTROOPER

Based on Star Wars: The Force Awakens and sporting the new Trooper design, the standard First Order Stormtrooper is once again a testament to how right Hot Toys can get these figures. Much like the original MMS 267, this includes both the signature blaster rifle and blaster pistol, obviously updated with the new design, and several interchangeable hands. A hexagonal stand is included, sporting the First Order emblem this time around. All in all, a great baseline entry in the new Stormtrooper line. Modern with classic sensibilities.

HOT TOYS MMS 346 STAR WARS: TFA – FINN & FO RIOT CONTROL STORMTROOPER

Capitalizing on the scene in TFA where ex-Stormtrooper Finn is confronted by one of his former peers and is subsequently called a traitor, Hot Toys released this two-pack in order for collectors to easily recreate that iconic moment. The Riot Trooper figure is fairly identical to the MMS 317, but with some new accessories. Trading the blaster rifle for a baton and riot shield, this Trooper is a nice variation on the original release.

HOT TOYS MMS 316 STAR WARS: TFA – FO STORMTROOPER SQUAD LEADER

If you’re thinking that this Hot Toys Exclusive release Squad Leader is just the First Order Stormtrooper figure with a new white shoulder pauldron and that’s it, then you’re absolutely right. Interestingly enough, this variant comes first in the numerical hierarchy of the Movie Masterpiece Series. If you’re thinking that this Hot Toys Exclusive release Squad Leader is just the First Order Stormtrooper figure with a new white shoulder pauldron and that’s it, then you’re absolutely right. HOT TOYS MMS 334 STAR WARS: TFA – FO STORMTROOPER OFFICER

Not another “different” Trooper with a shoulder pauldron! I know, this looks very similar to the aforementioned Squad Leader, but there is more to differentiate this one. First of all, the Officer’s pauldron is red, okay? Style is obviously paramount to the officers of the First Order. Secondly, this guy is rocking a black shoulder pouch on his right side to balance things out. I appreciate the dedication to symmetry. Finally, a blaster pistol and rifle may be fun, but we’ve also got some binoculars here, because all of that standing around is a lot more enjoyable when you can do some bird watching. I hope you now see how unique this Officer figure is and have learned your lesson.

HOT TOYS MMS 335 STAR WARS: TFA – FO STORMTROOPER SET

Two Stormtroopers for the price of one is what you’re getting here: a Plain Jane MMS 317 Trooper and the MMS 334 Officer variation that we just discussed. While the accessories for both single releases are included, there is a bonus extra for collectors who grabbed this set: a Mouse Droid. While, yes, the Droid maybe isn’t the most exciting bonus, it is a nice inclusion for those who were going to grab these two anyway.

HOT TOYS MMS 318 STAR WARS: TFA – FO HEAVY GUNNER STORMTROOPER

If you’re like me and have often thought to yourself, “Stormtroopers are cool, but they would be so much cooler with a big f***ing gun,” then I have the figure for you. The Heavy Gunner Trooper does away with the whimpy blaster rifle of old and opts instead for the gloriously over-the-top megablaster, a gun so big it requires an articulated stand to hold it up. A heavy artillery vest gives this Trooper a slightly more tactical look.

HOT TOYS MMS 319 STAR WARS: TFA – FO STORMTROOPER SET

Everything you loved about the MMS 317 Stormtrooper and the MMS 318 Heavy Gunner Stromtrooper in one release!

HOT TOYS MMS 333 STAR WARS: TFA – FO STORMTROOPER (JAKKU EXCLUSIVE)

In a nod to the Original Trilogy’s Sandtroopers, this Jakku Exclusive Stormtrooper comes with a desert floor base. A hi-tech survival backpack is also included, as well as the standard rifle and pistol and the binoculars that we’ve seen with the Officer release. Curiously, this Trooper is wearing the heavy artillery vest that the Heavy Gunner class also wears, but he doesn’t have a megablaster, so quite why he needs that specific artillery is a mystery. My best guess is that he’s a poser that tells his friends he left his megablaster at home. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.

HOT TOYS MMS 367 STAR WARS: TFA – FINN FO STORMTROOPER VERSION

Similar to the “Honorable Mentions” I gave the Luke and Han in disguise Stormtrooper figures in Part 1 of this list, the Hot Toys Exclusive Finn Trooper figure is for all intents and purposes a Trooper with an alternate John Boyega head. The weathered paintwork, specifically on the helmet with the bloody handprint, is suitably iconic and adds a lot to what could have been just another re-release of the MMS 317.

HOT TOYS MMS 428 STAR WARS: TLJ – EXECUTIONER TROOPER

What could have been a simple repaint ends up being much cooler than it has any right to be. The stark black swaths added to the shoulder pads and especially to the helmet make this variant pop on the shelf, especially amongst the other Stormtroopers.

Pushing the “Executioner” concept, this figure swaps out the blaster pistol for an “electric axe”. There was apparently a Limited Edition version of this release for Toys R Us that came with a variant of the figure stand.

FIRST ORDER STORMTROOPER VARIATIONS

HOT TOYS MMS 328 STAR WARS: TFA – CAPTAIN PHASMA

While certainly a character in her own right, Phasma’s design is without a doubt a unique variation on the First Order Stormtrooper design. The obvious departure from the standard trooper is the chrome finish and cape, but there are also several sculpt details in the armor that make Phasma stand out in subtle ways. Along with more interchangeable hands than the average Stormtrooper figure, Phasma also has a customized golden blaster rifle. While the character certainly failed expectations in her film appearances, she stands an extremely cool take on the modern Stormtrooper.

HOT TOYS MMS 544 STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER – SITH TROOPER

Much like Captain Phasma, the Sith Trooper figures sport a unique yet familiar Stromtrooper armor that takes the First Order redesign and then redesigns it a second time. Going with stark red in a nod to the Emperor’s Crimson Guard, the armor has several new patterns and sculpting flourishes that give the Sith Trooper a boxier silhouette. The redesigned blaster rifle and blaster pistol also sport the red and black color motif, as does the rectangular display stand. A definite head-turner of a release.

Well, we made it through the sequel to our Every Hot Toys Stormtrooper List in one piece. Check back for the next installment where we will dig into the more unique Stormtrooper designs. Thanks for reading.
